At last, I can say my garden of 2012 is finished. It contains geraniums as a main focal point, with a blue border of ageratum, standard begonias, and dustu millers protected by some trees, for shade, and tuberous begonias on the east side of the garden which will be shaded by an ornamental grass.
This is a stunning pot of flowers, which must have been watered 2x per day, and fertilized right. It is already Aug. and not getting tired.

If you want your potted flowers to be vibrant in August, then it is best to plant them yourself as smaller plants. The pots and baskets that look beautiful in may/june such as the ones from Costco, will peak early, and probably not be so vibrant in the end of summer. (unless you are lucky)

well, I just made a delicious pesto, from fresh basil, from my basil/mint pot. It is the only section of my garden with a useful function.

Joanne, this comment is for you- i couldn't find Kale this year- unless I wanted to pay big bucks
My efforts paid off- guess they didn't notice the Cinch bugs-Vaughan Community Blooms curb appeal sign was placed on my garden.

Weeds are proliic this year, also, there is an outbreak of cinch bugs.

This is typical cinch bug damage....an internet picture which is unfortunately typical of my lawn

Myrna's Garden in Mid-summer, Kale in the border,  coral coloured geranium, ornamental grasses,

Tip: Because geraniums need sunlighty, and grasses drape shade over the flowers, tie the grasses up like a pony tail  with natural coloured twine (or even a piece of long grass)and this contains the shade and keeps the geraniums blooming

One of my favourite plants is Kale. This is a long lasting annual, which becomes brighter in colour  in the colder months. The most economical way to buy is  in the beginning of the growing season, when it can be purchased as a regular plant in a 4 or 6 pack just like other annuals. (usually 1.29 for the pack)
They grow large and are great in borders. Leave room for them to grow, or  you can plant flowers in between them to give colour until the Kale becomes big and colourful. (Then they will hide the flowers in between but that is the whole point)

It can also be purchased pre-grown, large size at the end of summer or beginning of fall and that is approximately 10 dollars per plant.

For houses on the south side of the street (facing north), you will look for plants that prefer shade,

For houses on the north side of the street, you will look for plants that are sun loving.  http://extension.usu.edu/boxelder/files/uploads/Horticulture%20Files/Annuals%20for%20Sun.pdf
We will be reviewing my favourite plants as I go along in this blog, but on a gradual basis. For now, I will just post generalities.

For those readers who live on the south side of the street, the gardens in the front of your residence will require predominantly shade loving plants. hhttp://www.sensible-gardener-and-landscaper.com/Shade_annuals.html

In this Blog, I will answer questions about which type of plant is best for sun/shade, borders, pots etc.
Unfortunately my knowledge of perrenials is limited, because my "thing" is to change up my garden frequently.

Memories of the robins' nest from early summer

Welcome to Myrna's Garden. This is my first post as I am looking out the window to  the remnants of my summer garden which I never got around to fully clear- hence my winter garden. No artificial anything here just some bare branches, trees, and ornamental grass plumes.
My spring summer garden, usually lasts until October/November thanks to the ornamental cabbage plants which give colour until then. Stay tuned for some pictures
